Prompt
You are taking the ArchitectureIQ benchmark.

Each question describes one **dataset instance** and several **choices** (each choice is one **candidate**: model, optimizer, loss, and training budget). All choices train on the same dataset instance. Each choice's training budget (`total_samples_seen`) is stated in the prompt — either shared across all choices or specified per choice in the Sample budget section. Your task is to identify which choice will achieve the **best test metric** on the held-out test set after its stated training budget — using architecture and learning-mechanics reasoning only (no training results are provided).

Answer format is specified in the final section ("Your answer"): end your reply with a short `<explanation></explanation>` paragraph followed by a single letter in `<answer></answer>` tags.

## Dataset
Multivariate regression on `[0, 1]^n`: input is a vector `x ∈ R^n`, target is a scalar `y ∈ R` from a fixed symbolic expression. Train and test splits are fixed before any candidate training.

### Synthesis (PyTorch)
```python
def target(x: torch.Tensor) -> torch.Tensor:
    return torch.cos(2 * torch.pi * x[:, 6]) * torch.sin(2 * torch.pi * x[:, 0]) + torch.tanh(2 * x[:, 1]) ** 2 + x[:, 7] ** 2 - torch.cos(2 * torch.pi * x[:, 6]) + torch.tanh(2 * torch.tanh(2 * x[:, 4] ** 3)) + x[:, 0] - x[:, 2] + x[:, 3] + x[:, 5] + 6
def synthesize(
    *,
    train_size: int = 256,
    test_size: int = 256,
    point_seed: int = 1636417296,
    input_dim: int = 8,
    domain_low: float = 0.0,
    domain_high: float = 1.0,
) -> tuple[torch.Tensor, torch.Tensor, torch.Tensor, torch.Tensor]:
    gen = torch.Generator().manual_seed(point_seed)
    train_x = torch.rand(train_size, input_dim, generator=gen) * (domain_high - domain_low) + domain_low
    test_x = torch.rand(test_size, input_dim, generator=gen) * (domain_high - domain_low) + domain_low
    train_y = target(train_x)
    test_y = target(test_x)
    return train_x, train_y.unsqueeze(-1), test_x, test_y.unsqueeze(-1)
```

### Data splits and training protocol
- Target expression (canonical): `cos(2*pi*x6)*sin(2*pi*x0) + tanh(2*x1)**2 + x7**2 - cos(2*pi*x6) + tanh(2*tanh(2*x4**3)) + x0 - x2 + x3 + x5 + 6`
- Input dimension: 8
- Train split size: 256 fixed `(x, y)` pairs
- Test split size: 256 fixed `(x, y)` pairs (held out)
- Input domain: [0.0, 1.0] per coordinate, uniform sampling
- Point-sampling seed: 1636417296
- Evaluation: **test MSE** on the held-out split
- Reference device: cpu

## Sample budget (same for all choices)
- training_steps: 256
- batch_size: 16
- total_samples_seen: 4096 (= training_steps × batch_size)

## Evaluation metric
- Ground-truth ranking uses **test_mse** on the held-out test split.
- Each choice is trained independently for **10** seeds (`0`..`9`), one `torch.manual_seed(seed)` per run.
- Execution device: cpu.
- The correct choice has the lowest **mean** test_mse across seeds.

spiral_classification - q_025e45

Dataset: spiralcls_54a88e Answer: B Metric: test_ce

## Dataset
Two-spirals binary classification. The input is 2-dimensional by construction. Points are drawn along one of two interleaved Archimedean arms that differ by a half-turn phase; the label *is* the arm a point came from, so the classes are exactly balanced and there is no threshold to calibrate. The decision boundary spirals outward, so its complexity grows with the number of turns — stated in the dataset card below. Every candidate trains on the same materialized train/test splits.

### Data-generating and classification rule
- Rule family: `spiral`; active coordinates: `x_0`, `x_1` (input is 2-dimensional).
- Point distribution: classic interleaved two-spirals. Each point is drawn along one of two Archimedean arms: with `t` uniform on `[0.5, 0.5 + 6π]` (3 full turns), radius `r = t`, coordinates `(r·cos(t + phase), r·sin(t + phase))` with `phase ∈ {0, π}`.
- Label rule: `y = 0` for points drawn from the `phase = 0` arm and `y = 1` for points from the `phase = π` arm; both arms are equally likely, so classes are balanced.
- Nominal soft score (intuition only): `s(x) = sin(atan2(x_1, x_0) − ‖x‖₂)`; its zero level sets trace the two arms, but labels come from the generative arm, not from thresholding `s(x)`.
- Bayes decision boundary: assign each point to the nearer of the two arms (up to label-flip symmetry); with 3 full turns the arms interleave, so the boundary is highly non-linear.
- Reproducibility: point seed `61356666`, spiral turns `3`.

### Data splits and training protocol
- Task: binary classification on one fixed synthetic tabular train/test split.
- Input shape: float32 `[N, 2]`; labels: int64 `[N]` in `{0, 1}`.
- Train rows: 1024; held-out test rows: 2048.
- Every choice receives the same materialized split; minibatches sample train indices uniformly with replacement.
- Evaluation: **test cross-entropy** is primary; test accuracy is auxiliary only.
- Reference device: cpu

## Sample budget (same for all choices)
- training_steps: 256
- batch_size: 32
- total_samples_seen: 8192 (= training_steps × batch_size)

## Evaluation metric
- Ground-truth ranking uses **test_ce** on the held-out test split.
- Each choice is trained independently for **10** seeds (`0`..`9`), one `torch.manual_seed(seed)` per run.
- Execution device: cpu.
- The correct choice has the lowest **mean** test_ce across seeds.

synthetic_tabular_classification - q_242d99

Dataset: stabcls_b0a99d Answer: A Metric: test_ce

## Dataset
Synthetic tabular binary classification. Features are drawn i.i.d. from a standard normal; a latent score `s(x)` over a few active coordinates is thresholded at a fixed cut-off chosen near the median of `s(x)`, so the two classes are close to balanced. The score is non-linear in the features, so no linear function of the inputs reproduces the boundary. The dataset card below states the exact rule family, active coordinates, weights, threshold, and the class balance it produces. Every candidate trains on the same materialized train/test splits.

### Data-generating and classification rule
- Rule family: `smooth_additive`; active coordinates: `x_3`, `x_6`, `x_9`, `x_10`
- Feature distribution: every coordinate is sampled independently from `Normal(0, 1)`.
- Latent score:
  - `s(x) = -1.125·[sin(x_3) + 0.25·x_3²] - 1.375·[sin(x_6) + 0.25·x_6²] + 1.125·[sin(x_9) + 0.25·x_9²] + 1·[sin(x_10) + 0.25·x_10²]`
- Label rule: `y = 1` exactly when `s(x) > -0.125`; otherwise `y = 0`.
- Bayes decision boundary: `s(x) = -0.125`; labels are an exact function of `x`, so this boundary is attainable.
- Threshold calibration: `-0.125` was chosen from 4096 independent calibration rows as the closest round value to the 50% quantile of `s(x)`; on those 4096 rows it labels 51.0% of them class 1.
- Reproducibility: point seed `1001081179`, calibration seed `1001082179`.

### Data splits and training protocol
- Task: binary classification on one fixed synthetic tabular train/test split.
- Input shape: float32 `[N, 16]`; labels: int64 `[N]` in `{0, 1}`.

- total_samples_seen: 32768

Each choice specifies its own `training_steps` and `batch_size` below; they must satisfy `training_steps × batch_size = total_samples_seen`.

## Evaluation metric
- Ground-truth ranking uses **test_ce** on the held-out test split.
- Each choice is trained independently for **10** seeds (`0`..`9`), one `torch.manual_seed(seed)` per run.
- Execution device: cpu.
- The correct choice has the lowest **mean** test_ce across seeds.

## Dataset
Bigram language modeling: each example is a length-`L` window of token IDs. Labels are the next token at each position, sampled from a **single fixed** bigram law `P(y|x)` shared by train and test. Only the random windows differ between splits.

### Synthesis (PyTorch)

## Dataset
**Family:** univariate regression on `[0, 1]`.

- Input and target are 1-D scalars.
- Training and test points are sampled uniformly on the domain.
- The target is a symbolic expression of `x`, and `y` is its exact evaluation.

### Synthesis (PyTorch)
```python
def target(x: torch.Tensor) -> torch.Tensor:
    return torch.sin(2 * torch.pi * x ** 2) * x
def synthesize(
    *,
    train_size: int = 256,
    test_size: int = 256,
    point_seed: int = 19519197,
    domain_low: float = 0.0,
    domain_high: float = 1.0,
) -> tuple[torch.Tensor, torch.Tensor, torch.Tensor, torch.Tensor]:
    gen = torch.Generator().manual_seed(point_seed)
    train_x = torch.rand(train_size, generator=gen) * (domain_high - domain_low) + domain_low
    test_x = torch.rand(test_size, generator=gen) * (domain_high - domain_low) + domain_low
    train_y = target(train_x)
    test_y = target(test_x)
    return train_x.unsqueeze(-1), train_y.unsqueeze(-1), test_x.unsqueeze(-1), test_y.unsqueeze(-1)
```

### Data splits and training protocol
- Target expression (canonical): `sin(2*pi*x**2)*x`
- Train split size: 256 fixed `(x, y)` pairs
- Test split size: 256 fixed `(x, y)` pairs (held out)
- Input domain: [0.0, 1.0], uniform sampling
- Point-sampling seed: 19519197 (materializes the fixed train/test splits)
- Minibatch construction: each step draws `batch_size` train indices uniformly at random **with replacement**
- Evaluation: **test MSE** is mean squared error on the entire fixed test split
- Randomness: `torch.manual_seed(seed)` once before model init and the training loop
- Reference device: cpu

## Sample budget (same for all choices)
- training_steps: 1024
- batch_size: 16
- total_samples_seen: 16384 (= training_steps × batch_size)

## Evaluation metric
- Ground-truth ranking uses **test_mse** on the held-out test split.
- Each choice is trained independently for **10** seeds (`0`..`9`), one `torch.manual_seed(seed)` per run.
- Execution device: cpu.
- The correct choice has the lowest **mean** test_mse across seeds.

## Dataset
XOR binary classification on tabular features. Features are drawn i.i.d. from a standard normal; the label depends on the *sign agreement* of two active coordinates, so no linear function of the inputs separates the classes at all — a model must compose the two coordinates multiplicatively. Any remaining coordinates are pure distractors. The dataset card below states the active coordinates and the exact label rule. Every candidate trains on the same materialized train/test splits.

### Data-generating and classification rule
- Rule family: `xor`; active coordinates: `x_1`, `x_5`
- Feature distribution: every coordinate is sampled independently from `Normal(0, 1)`.
- Latent score:
  - `s(x) = -x_1·x_5`
- Label rule: `y = 1` exactly when `s(x) > 0`; otherwise `y = 0`.
- XOR interpretation: `x` is class 1 exactly when its two active coordinates have opposite signs, and class 0 when they share a sign.
- Bayes decision boundary: `s(x) = 0`; labels are an exact function of `x`, so this boundary is attainable.
- Threshold calibration: `0` was chosen from 4096 independent calibration rows as the closest round value to the 50% quantile of `s(x)`; on those 4096 rows it labels 51.2% of them class 1.
- Reproducibility: point seed `502196061`, calibration seed `502197061`.

### Data splits and training protocol
- Task: binary classification on one fixed synthetic tabular train/test split.
- Input shape: float32 `[N, 8]`; labels: int64 `[N]` in `{0, 1}`.

- training_steps: 1024
- batch_size: 32
- total_samples_seen: 32768 (= training_steps × batch_size)

## Evaluation metric
- Ground-truth ranking uses **test_ce** on the held-out test split.
- Each choice is trained independently for **10** seeds (`0`..`9`), one `torch.manual_seed(seed)` per run.
- Execution device: cpu.

## Your answer
Choose exactly one of A, B, C. End your reply with exactly two tagged fields, in this order and with nothing after them:

<explanation>The mechanism that decides the winner, and why each other choice loses.</explanation>
<answer>the letter of your chosen option</answer>

Rules: `<answer>` must contain exactly one letter from {A, B, C}. The grader reads only the **final** `<answer>` tag in your reply.
